DESCRIPTION:
Polymerase alpha in a complex with DNA primase is a replicative polymerase. In addition to polymerase activity, this DNA polymerase exhibits 3' to 5' exonuclease activity.

MISCELLANEOUS:
In eukaryotes there are five DNA polymerases: alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon which are responsible for different reactions of DNA synthesis.


STRUCTURE SIMILARITY:
Belongs to the DNA polymerase type-B family.


CATALYTIC ACTIVITY:
Deoxynucleoside triphosphate + DNA(n) = diphosphate + DNA(n+1).
Degradation of single-stranded DNA. It acts progressively in a 3'- to 5'-direction, releasing nucleoside 5'-phosphates.
