methyl chloride

ABBREVIATIONS:
MeCl

DESCRIPTION: Is a direct-acting methylating compound existing in the environment. An estimated 5x10v6 tons per year are emitted globally, mostly from biomass burning and biological synthesis by microorganisms and marine algae. These organisms have a methyltransferase which catalyzes the methylation of halide ions. MeCl, MeBr, and MeI can alkylate DNA and are mutagenic and carcinogenic.

DNA DAMAGES:
N1-methyl A (1meA)
3-methyl C (3meC)
