N4-(3-oxopropenyl)cytosine is an endogenous product of malondialdehyde (MDA) adduct to DNA. Lipid peroxidation may produce reactive aldehydes such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), which may form aldehyde-protein adducts.
